Eurostat presents Influenza statistics from 2019, 2020 and 2021

Eurostat presents the following data in this article:

  1. Influenza vaccination rate among people aged 65 and over from 2009 to 2021 [1].
  2. Self-reported data on influenza vaccination among people aged 65 and over in 2019.
  3. Standardized death rates from influenza, categorized by age group, in 2020.

It is important to note that the data from 2020 and 2021 might have been influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated restrictions. Therefore, when comparing this data with previous years, special attention should be given. In certain EU Member States, the healthcare system faced significant pressure, especially at the beginning of the pandemic, due to a surge in COVID-19 patients. As a result, various services were limited or postponed due to the high number of COVID-19 cases. Additionally, hospitals and day care centers experienced staff shortages because of infection/quarantine protocols, while infected/quarantined individuals, as well as lockdown and travel restrictions, hindered patients from accessing medical services. Furthermore, the COVID-19 vaccination campaigns may have increased awareness about other preventive measures, such as getting vaccinated against influenza.
